BBPSP PROTOCOL UPDATE

On October 19, 2009, the most recent version of the Blood Borne Pathogens Study Protocol (v10) was approved by the Research Ethics Board in Edmonton.

This latest version increases the volume of blood taken for adult patients to a total of 6-24.5cc (from a previous total of 6-14.5cc). The additional 10cc will be drawn into CPDA tubes. Some new assays cannot use EDTA blood due to the tight Ca++ binding of EDTA relative to citrate.

This latest version will be rolled out to participating centers in the coming months.

We are excited to announce that Ottawa’s Alan Tinmouth will be a co-P.I. on this project! We look forward to his insight, support and involvement.

NEW LABEL PROGRAM-READY FOR DOWNLOAD

A new version of the BBPSP label program is now available for download and will be distributed to all clinics, along with directions for its use. This version is to be used on the NEW barcode label sheets that will be sent out with the instruction manual. The new nylon sheets provide more labels per sheet (32 versus 12), places a carbon-copy of handwritten information on the base form, and the labels stick better!

Look forward to a package coming to you shortly!

BASECAMP

Basecamp is a web-based project management and collaboration tool that our team has been using for the past few years.
Several months ago Dr. Ritchie forwarded each Clinic Director an email with login information. By logging-in you will have direct access to the most updated information on BBPSP and CHAVI. If you need this information again, please contact tsoll @ualberta.ca for details.

The Blood Safety and Supply Committee of the Canadian Hemophilia Society made a policy recommendation to the board to incorporate the testing of vCJD on the hemophilia population. This recommendation was recently endorsed by the CHS Board of Directors.

The committee also supports the CHAVI research and requests "that members of AHCDC do all they can to further this important work to find a vaccine for HIV/AIDS."

These endorsements are posted on Basecamp.

The Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology (CHAVI) is a consortium of universities and academic medical centers established by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under Barton Haynes, MD, of Duke University. The Center's goal is to solve major problems in HIV vaccine development and design.

The AHCDC and BBPSP are collaborating with CHAVI to provide samples for the “Investigation of Gene Variants Associated with Resistance and Susceptibility to HIV-1 Infection in High Risk of HIV-1 Exposure but Uninfected Individuals with Severe Hemophilia A" study.

Amorfix has developed a blood test for vCJD and is collaborating with the Blood Borne Pathogens Surveillance Program and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to test consented Canadian samples.
The French and British transfusion services have recently purchased this assay.

PHAC has previously agreed to provide counseling for affected patients. We are currently in talks with Health Canada, PHAC, CBS and HemaQuebec about the impact of this testing on the blood supply and hemophilia population.

Winter is upon us!
Please remember to heat up your temperature packages prior to shipping due to lower temperatures in transport: preheat the two temperature control packs for 2 minutes per pack in a microwave or for 1 hour in a 37 C water bath

*IMPORTANT* Samples must be placed between the temperature packs to keep the blood from freezing!
